Located on the west bank of the Guayas River, Santiago de Guayaquil is the second largest city in Ecuador and one of the two main connecting cities (along with Quito) from where you can travel to Galapagos Islands. Famous for its colorful streets and unique colonial architecture, the city founded in the 1530 was numerous times rebuilt following a series of devastating earthquakes and fires that took place over the years.
From spotting wild iguanas that seem to be everywhere, to strolling down the city’s beautiful promenade, the most popular budget-friendly attractions include: • Seminario (Iguana) Park • Malecon 2000 • Cerro Santa Ana • Guayaquil Lighthouse • Botanical Garden • Miniature Museum • Las Penas.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The best time to visit Guayaquil is between June and September, when the weather is slightly cooler and less humid. While it’s warm all year round, this period offers more pleasant mornings for exploring the Malecón 2000, wandering through the colorful Las Peñas neighborhood, or climbing the steps of Cerro Santa Ana without melting in the heat.
Avoid the peak of the rainy season, especially February and March, when showers are frequent and the humidity makes exploring a bit less comfortable. But even then, Guayaquil’s street food, art, and tropical charm have a way of pulling you in.
